A person who has served or is still actively serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Criteria for Verified Veteran®

• served in the *U.S. Armed Forces for at least 180 days of active duty
• applicants who not serving on active duty orders or currently attached to a reserve component must have earned an Honorable Discharge or any other type of discharge with the exceptions of Entry-Level-Separation and Dishonorable Discharge. 
• Entry-Level-Separation and Dishonorable Discharges will automatically disqualify the applicant
  

*U.S. Armed Forces are made up of the five armed service branches: Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Navy. There are three general categories of military personnel: active duty (full-time Marines, soldiers and sailors), reserve & guard forces (usually work a civilian job, but can be called to full-time military duty), and prior service veterans and retirees (past members of the military).

Title 38, United States Code of Federal Regulations -- Veterans' Benefits Chapter 1 — General § 101.(2) under definitions reads: “The term 'veteran' means a person who served in the active military, naval, or air service, and who was discharged or released therefrom under conditions other than dishonorable.”
